Sister Mary Urban
Harrer, SSM
Miracles Campaign Special Honorary Chair
Blessed with endless energy and an effervescent personality, Sister
Mary Urban Harrer is the symbol of Saint Clare’s in the community.
From 1967-1971, Sister served as the chief administrator for Saint
Clare’s.
In 1974, Sister Urban looked to create a new and innovative way
to raise money. Born in Bavaria, she looked to mirror events like
those of Germany’s famous Oktoberfests. From this basic idea
grew one of Sister’s most significant accomplishments, the
Annual Saint Clare’s Harvest Festival, which enjoyed a successful
annual run from 1974-2003. During that time, the Festival became
a fall tradition welcoming over 50,000 annually for this one-day
event. The key to the success was Sister’s motivation of over
2,000 volunteers for each year’s event.
Sister Urban is an active member of the Saint Clare’s family,
and remains a fixture in the community. She visits patients at Saint
Clare’s Hospital/Denville daily and continues her ministry
among us with the same smile, upbeat attitude and love for life and
those around her.
